HHL Architects was engaged by Snyder Corporation to design a new 9600-sf pool, locker room, and spa/salon facility to complement the existing fitness and recreational facilities of this 130+ acre retreat/fitness camp. This new natatorium, along with the other facilities, will be utilized by NBC’s The Biggest Loser competition program. The complex is now referred to as “The Biggest Loser Resort Niagara”.
The new one-story, wood-framed facility are designed to fit into the existing ‘camp-ground’ aesthetic. In this approximately 6,000 sq. ft. exposed wood glue-laminated beam natatorium, a gunite concrete pool is provided, along with an in-deck whirlpool spa for ten. South and East-facing windows supply ample daylight into the space to minimize the need for artificial lighting. Adjacent men’s and women’s locker facilities accommodate 40 people and include a dry sauna in each space with wood-beamed sloping ceilings.
HHL also designed a new ‘fitness village quad’ in between the new pool building and the surrounding fitness and sleeping facilities. Pool dehumidification and emergency power is provided to ensure that this year round rural retreat is operational and comfortable for the guests and contestants.
