HHL Architects, in collaboration with Gary Cannella Associates of Patchogue, NY, designed this mixed-use low income housing project for local artists and their families. The village of Patchogue pursued Artspace Projects, Inc. to develop a new “destination” mixed-use residential complex as a focal point to the village revitalization effort.
Taking historical reference from a local textile mill, HHL Architects developed a design for a vacant parcel in the villages’ downtown core. The urban sensitive solution is comprised of a 5-story tower containing apartments, gallery space, and support facilities flanked by two 3-story wings.
The residential wings have the scale and look of an urban town house but are actually divided into one-, two- and three-bedroom live/work loft apartments for artists. Most of the 45 units take advantage of Northern light through large glazed windows. HHL Architects worked closely with Department of Housing and Community Renewal on this innovative affordable housing project.
